I've invented and developed a way to make skateboard decks out of 100% recycled plastic and I'm releasing it open source.
I'm making a download kit containing all the information people need to make their own and I’m sharing it, online, for free.
This project not only gives us the chance to get our hands on the very first batch of skateboard decks, to ever be made from recycled plastic, it also gives us the opportunity to support small scale plastic recyclers all over the world, by giving them a functional, popular and valued product they can make from plastic waste, for free.
You all know that plastic waste is bad so I'm not going to waste your time reading about it, I'm just going to leave you with five quick numbers.
Every year we produce over 350 million tons of new plastic.
Since its invention, over 9 billion tons of new plastic has been produced.
More than 90% is recyclable...
...but less than 10% actually gets recycled.
This means that there is over 6 billion tons of plastic waste in the world right now, ready to be collected and recycled.
So even if we completely stopped producing plastic right now there is still a little bit we need to tidy up
The aspect that stands out most about recycled plastic products is the beauty of their appearance.
What is often overlooked is how strong and durable they can be.
I wanted to create a product that blows people's expectations of what recycled plastic can really do!
Thats why I chose skateboard decks, they are products that get put through extreme conditions: bumped, grinded and dropped.
These are the first traditional popsicle decks in the world to be made from 100% recycled plastic.
This shape was chosen because it best demonstrates the potential of the material due to its thinness.
Lots of people all over the world are asking how they can get a deck and how to make them.
The next step to make this possible is to create a digital download kit containing all the information people need to make their own.
The download kit will include all the information people need to start producing them:
3D models
Engineering drawings
Electronics schematics
Assembly guide
Build video
Usage video
Technical data sheets
Bill of materials
All this information will be shared online, open source for free so that anybody in the world can download it, build their own and start making decks.
The decks are designed to be produced using the Precious Plastic Extruder which is also open source so you can build one yourself.

The extruder is being replicated and used by 1000’s of people around the world.
The download kit will be distributed online on several websites including the Precious Plastic platform, the go-to spot for open source plastic recycling knowledge.
The community platform includes a library of “How-to” guides containing step by step information about plastic recycling techniques, which is where the download kit and details about the process will be shared.
The platform also contains a Bazar where anyone who produces the decks can easily sell them.
To make it as easy as possible for people all over the world, not just me, to start recycling as much plastic as possible!
Being open source also allows people to develop their own iterations and variations of the design which they can then share back so we can all work together to push the concept forward and collaboratively solve the plastic waste problem.

I started working on this project six years ago during my Industrial Product Design degree at Brunel University. During my time there MANDIN was born and the first prototype decks were made.
Since then I've been pushing to grow my knowledge about plastic recycling and collecting experiences that can be applied to the skateboard deck project.

For the last two years I have been working as a resident designer at a project started by this guy:
Precious Plastic flagships open source plastic recycling research and is the world's largest grassroots plastic recycling network, with over 7,000 members. We develop machines, techniques and digital tools which are distributed online for free so people all over the world can start recycling plastic and become part of it.
With the help of all the genius minds around me at Precious Plastic I was able to refine and perfect the process of making decks, and now they are ready to be shared with the world. (yay!)
